Hey Guys and Gals, Grifthin here. Today I'm gonna be tossing up my First draft of a Imperial Guard list. I'm currently building towards this list (Why did I decide to start guard again ?), and will hopefully have the army fully assembled by the middle of the year. I know I've made some really odd equipment choices, but I wanna play with some of the toyz in the dex before writing them off. Comments welcome.

A lot of an Imperial Guard army composition will depend very much on your style of play, i.e. what you've set out to build and do. Also this must be factored in against what type of opponents and missions/games you tend to play, which will evolve your play style over time.
ReplyDeleteI would know this, as my regular opponents in my local gamin group are both Marines and Orks, so depending on who I play, more AP3 weapons/template-blast-punishers appear! Conversely, more shooty/dakka and melta/power klaw weapons appear to counter my IG.
From what I see above, with a lack of given reasons as to why you've selected certain units here and there I can infer that you've picked units that are a little fun, a little fluffy, a little bit competetive. All in all, an all-rounded first time list at first glance.
Looking deeper, we observe as follows:
1. Command squad built for sniping - pie plates, camo, officer of the fleet. Personally, if you really do want sniper weapons (if playing vs 'nids) I'd go for ratlings, and put my command squad in a chimera with meltauns to better utilise their BS4, also to make a mobile, flexible command that is protected, but also able to give 2no. orders at 12" radius to your large blocks of men (Bring it Down! and FRFSRF will be your best friends), if you insist on using large blocks of men you will want to capitalise this with your Orders.
2. Troops and Chimelta vets seem fine. With an autocannon load-out you plan to obviously sit your men down, in cover preferably, shooting away at the enemy. With that in mind, I certainly recommend putting your command HQ (no.01) in a chimera, to further exploit the advantage of orders and maximise your dakka. Also you have a good spread of scoring units, and chimeltas lend flexibility and killing power. Just watch out for assaults and KP missions!
Note: Your Chimera load-out is also quite important. If it were up to me, go for multi-laser on turret, heavy flamer on hull, and a heavy stubber defensive, always keeping your chimera on the move to avoid instanthits with assaults, but still being able to pepper away with 2 guns as you move, and/or flame opponents up close.
Also, I have a preference to arm my vets with shotguns AND a power weapon for the sarge, that way you get to move a chimera 6", fire 2 weapons, disembark, fire your entire Meltavet squad, and STILL be able to assault with your vets with a power weapon. Note: This is only good if you're mopping up remnants of a squad (e.g. 2-3 MEQ or Orks left). Not recommended to do this when they're at full strength!
3. Hell hounds and Sentinels are fun. Go for it and see what works for you! So is Marbo, if he ever hits anything! (Make sure you deploy him to maximise a cover save, PLUS if he ever gets shot at go to ground. E.g. deploy in 4+ save, with stealth this becomes 3+, when deployed he cannot assault so go to ground if shot at, 2+ cover save. If assaulted, he normally gets to go first with his Initiative of 5).
4. Leman Russ tank. I would drop the sponsons, and the lascannon spending the points on something else. First, you'll always want to keep your tanks on the move so you'll never be able to fire the sponson anyway (firing your hull-mounted weapon). Secondly, lascannons are a waste of points as your chimelta vets do much, much better, so just keep a heavy bolter hull-mounted for free. This way you get to save 2X (15 + 20) for a total of 70 points. What should you spend it on? Oh! Dump the sniper weapons and camo cloaks, buy a Chimera and MORE melta! :P
5. Presumably you've brought an Officer of the fleet because your opponents tend to reserve. If this is so, it's a great buy! (I've done a recent batrep on my blog showing just that). If they don't reserve, they're pretty useless and drop him. Also if your opponent plays drop pods (if marines), Officer doesn't do anything, so be careful.
Hope that helps, and feel free to take on board or disregard any of the above!

Thanks for the response - I Primarily play against Against Tyranids, Space Marines, Chaos Daemons and Tau.
ReplyDeleteThe Primary reason for a large amount of AP2 high str firepower is because of all the T6 nasties walking/flying/deepstriking in my area. I kept hull heavy bolters on all my vehicles to try and keep the anti infantry firepower up.
At the moment I'm just gonna slap this list out when I'm done building, try out some of the toys and then specialize it into a horrible horrible sledgehammer with which to beat the emperor's enemies. Your Feedback has been much appreciated.
If deepstriking is your local gaming group's thing, consider building an anti-deepstrike inquisitorial daemonhunter retinue with mystics. :) Check out chainfist.com for advice on that.
ReplyDeleteShort of that, put everything in reserve.
The evolution of my own lists, preference and playing style (very much chimelta vets) is because the local marine player LOVES deepstrike and fastplay bikes. My platoons and platoons of men always get chewed up like tissue paper and giving away and losing KP games quickly becomes not fun ater about 6 or 7 times. Again, if you read through my blog and it's posts you'll see exactly what I mean.
The mechanised supremacy stacks the game back to the Imperial Guard's favour against all opponents. Sadly, not everyone likes to play an Armoured Fist Armageddon Steel legion (see: Eldar) fast moving well-armoured fast hitting style of play, but unfortunately it works, and it works well.
With the tanks, I have found while lascannons V T6 nasties seem fun, the sheer fact that they are deep striking plus the tanks BS3 50% hit rate, tells me I think it would be better to invest in more rate of fire, as opposed to quality of firepower. I also think you will find after playing a few games with your shiny new toys, lascannons and sponsons are NOT the way to go, and it would be better to re-invest the points in more chimelta vets.
But that's my opinion! :)
Oh, and while you're at it, you MUST try the overcosted Leman Russ Punisher against 'Nids. It really is as fun as they say it is. :)
Nice, I'm actually trying to avoid the Chimelta spam because it's so popular (I'm funny that way). However what do you think of this hilarity. Punisher with Hull and Sponson heavy Bolters. Tank Commander Pask upgrade. That's BS4, 29 Str 6 shots that can reroll wounds against Monstrous creatures. Expensive as heck but, looks incredibly fun.
ReplyDeleteUnderstood re: chimelta spam, how I long for the day my opponents prepare themselves by spammingo ut meltaguns and multi-meltas, only be be faced with an onslaught of infantry platoon blobs! Now, if only I can purchase enough toy soldiers...
ReplyDeleteI've used the Punisher to wipe out a remnant squad of 15 gaunts in one go. good shootin'!), and a Pask Punisher means Bye Bye Mr. Carnifex! Great for laughs (and maybe even VS Orks) and fun games, though not much use against tougher-armed opponents, unless of course, for mop-up duty.
Case in point: I shot a basic Punisher with hull-mounted h.bolter at a 5 men squad of Termies, and got to kill one termie:
Say in terms of likelihood: 0.5 (to hit) x 23 (no. of shots + h.bolter 3no. shots) x 0.67 (to wound) x 0.17 (likelihood for termie to fail) = 1.3 Termies dead on average.
Or against a 10men squad of marines, I only managed to kill 2 (considered poor rollin'):
0.5 (to hit) x 23 (no. of shots + h.bolter 3no. shots) x 0.33 (likelihood of marine to fail) = 3.8 marines dead on average.
Have fun with the Pask!
